    The Director of Application Operations & Technical Services is responsible for proactively directing and providing management oversight of Smithfield’s SAP system landscapes and ecosystem which includes the oversight of the BASIS, monitoring, troubleshooting, configuring, scheduling, capacity planning, monitoring and job scheduling functions.  It also includes directing the Release Management and SAP transport processes to ensure proper testing and quality assurance processes are implemented and followed, including system patches and upgrades.


    In addition, this employee will have ongoing responsibilities to manage our SAP related vendors to assure performance metrics are achieved or surpassed and identifying and implementing system enhancements and related IT process improvements needed to provide on-going supportability. Supports the SAP functional areas on relevant technical questions and on system health-check assessment requests.



    • Responsible to support, develop and design critical business systems installed on SAP’s NetWeaver platform. Systems will include S/4 ECC, TM, BW, HANA, ADS, Portal NW Gateway, TWE 8.4, HP-ALM, UPerform, HCM ESS/MSS, GRC, Solution Manager, Cronacle (Redwood).
    • Acts as central point of contact for SAP system landscape related matters. Interfaces with leadership on alignment, improving accountability and joint problem resolution.
    • Provides technical expertise, direction and oversight on the day-to-day operations of the SAP BASIS functions and development support.
    • Develops and maintains technical infrastructure with hosting partners, business continuity planning, High Availability and Disaster Recovery (RTO/RPO) objectives to meet business needs.
    • Participate in the architectural governance function and processes to ensure the ongoing alignment of business architecture, functional architecture and technical architecture from an enterprise solution perspective.
    • Understands Enterprise Architecture framework, semantics, data integration, ESB, EAI, ETL and knowledge of commercial products, identify pitfalls related to compliance, technology limitations, cost etc.
    • Responsible to design enterprise wide integration for various business scenarios using current technology and systems to provide long term cost effective solutions.
    • When required, analyze changes necessary to the system landscape and hardware architecture triggered by changes in business requirements, processes or technical requirements, develop options to incorporate the changes and take/facilitate the appropriate decisions.
    • Serves as the owner of Smithfield’s SAP ecosystem roadmap.  This includes working with various members of Smithfield’s IT leadership team, Enterprise Solutions Architecture and the Business through IT Business Relationship Managers (BRMs) and IT Business Analysts (BAs) to understand/present direction on new/existing products, support packs and upgrades.  This also includes the understanding and communication of interoperability with pros/cons, along with developing the overall schedule for the entire set of SAP products.
    • Manage the performance of SAP hosting and support vendors to ensure contracted Service Level Agreements are met for Smithfield’s 24 x 7 x 365 operations and support of its mission critical Enterprise application systems.

    • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university in Computer Science, Business, Information Systems, IT or related field and 10+ years of IT & SAP experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience, required.
    • Bachelor's Degree, preferred.
    • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required.
    • Experience with SAP Applications ECC, BW, SCM, PI/PO, Portals, TM, BOBJ, Redwood, Oracle & HANA experience, OS - Linux, Windows, Unix
    • 3+ years of SAP HANA Experience, at least 3 full cycles of sap implementations.
    • 2+ years’ experience, vendor Management, hosting services providers and AMS support. Prior experience working with outsourced provider for Level 1, 2 and 3 support, preferred.
    • Proven experience in navigating complex organizations, creative problem solving, and rational experimentation.
    • Ability to translate complex technical topics into easy to understand concepts.
    • Ability to manage escalations and communications during critical outages and activities.
    • Solid analytical skills, experience solving practical issues and engaging cross functional teams of multiple process partners to gain consensus.
    • Experience developing a team and strategy.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively communicate with peers and executive leadership.
    • Strong leadership and management skills that align with the Smithfield culture. Specific skills include facilitating change, driving operational excellence, and striving for continuous improvement.
    • Experience with project management.
    • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
    • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    • Provides leadership and guidance to IT employees and also provides oversight for Smithfield's outsourced vendors.

    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

    • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.
