The Smithfield internship program offers students a paid opportunity to work in an environment that fosters real-life experiences, explores career options, and applies your education.  You will become a part of key management meetings and participate in meaningful projects.  Our goal is to provide a working environment that not only encourages creativity, but offers equality, diversity, mutual respect and productivity.  Our summer internships are typically 10 weeks. 

 

This internship will take place in and around a Distribution Center. The role will provide the opportunity to gain exposure and broaden skills through impactful work, mentored relationships, and real world exposure to different disciplines within Smithfield.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and tasks are written as follows:

 

Improvement Projects

  • This internship will take place in and around a Distribution Center.
  • Gains exposure and the opportunity to broaden skills through impactful work, mentored relationships, and will gain real world exposure to different disciplines on Smithfield’s team. 
  • Understands the various roles and interdependencies within an operations team.
  • Gains experience in identifying and executing cost savings and process improvement projects.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross functional environment with partner departments such as plant operations, purchasing, and business development.
  • Promotes innovative thinking to generate unique and value-added packaging ideas for existing or new processes.
  • Conducts root cause analysis to improve operational issues.
  • Accounts for and documents process influences that will require change to produce the improved process.  This includes, but  is not limited to; Operations, Safety, Training and Financial impacts.
  • Works effectively in a cross functional environment and engages in partnerships with departmental leaders to establish the framework for proposed changes.
  • Communicates with members of operational management on a regular basis to report progress on projects and receives feedback from the various departments to develop processes and practices that meet internal and customer expectations.
  • Creates formal proposals and presentations and presents to various levels of management.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions. 

  • Supply Chain, Packaging or other related major, minimum 3.0 GPA required
  • Must have completed your sophomore year in college
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience working with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to learn and work in a team environment
  • Proactive thinker and self-motivated
  • Broad understanding of packaging materials, equipment, and manufacturing processes
  • Strong time, project, and organizational management skills
  • The ability to work independently

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • The Distribution environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the loading areas.
