This position will serve as a company resource in the design of packaging and packaging systems to assure food safety, provide value to our customer and present our products in a positive manner while controlling overall costs. This position must work closely with Suppliers, Strategic Sourcing, Business Management Teams, Production Plants, Marketing, and other cross functional team members in Smithfield to successfully complete projects related to new products and current product optimization, as well as identifying and implementing cost savings opportunities.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and tasks are written as follows:

  1. Effectively manages projects through planning, organizing and coordination to ensure projects are completed within required deadlines.
  2. Coordinates packaging construction design with operations and engineering to ensure successful scale-up and commercialization.
  3. Works as a member of Product Development Project Teams from Ideation and concept development through product and packaging development and full commercial launch. Assures projects proceed within designated timelines, meets project objectives for product character, packaging structure/presentation and cost of goods.
  4. Maintains positive, productive relationships with Research & Development, Manufacturing, Procurement, Marketing, Strategic Sourcing and suppliers.
  5. Maintains knowledge of the developments and trends in packaging for possible applications with the company's present and future products.
  6. Drives and identifies cost savings improvement projects through the optimization of primary and secondary package design / re-design.
  7. Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis to support continuous improvement programs in the manufacturing processes through the understanding of material and machine interface improvement opportunities.
  8. Creates and revises packaging specifications and pallet patterns to support manufacturing and new product initiatives.
  9. Understands in-house product requirements and supplier manufacturing processes including film, printing, die cutting, folding carton, and corrugated to provide technical expertise for solving packaging related quality issues.
  10. Manages and reports cost saving initiatives for packaging related projects.
  11. Contributes to the development of departmental objectives, standard operating procedures and policies.
  12. Provides support in a cross functional manner with other departments (Operations, Customer Fulfillment, Materials Receiving) when presented with quality issues related to packaging. Prioritizes, manages, quantifies, tracks and reports all packaging improvement projects.
  13. Acts as a lead by training, mentoring and providing guidance to less experienced Packaging Engineers.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) from a four-year regionally accredited college or university in Engineering, with Packaging Science/Engineering preferred, and 2+ years related experience and/or training in Package Development required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have broad knowledge of packaging materials, equipment and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in the food industry, preferred.
  • General knowledge of food science, processing and manufacturing, preferred.
  • Familiarity with ASTM and TAPPI standards related to packaging.
  • Must possess good research and development capabilities, including experimental design, familiarity with packaging testing methodology and experience in commercialization.
  • Knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office's Word and Excel.
  • Design for Manufacturability/understanding of Design of Experiment Methodology’s.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and still meet critical project milestones.
  • Ability to present conclusions and recommendations to management team.
  • Effective communication including face to face interactions, written/electronic updates and full technical reporting and recordkeeping.
  • Ability to travel frequently.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may act as a lead by providing training and guidance to other Packaging Engineers.
