Overview

The Senior Payroll Manager is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Smithfield payroll team, and ensuring continuous improvement of processes and procedures.  Ultimately, they are accountable for ensuring our procedures are optimized to support accurate and timely receipt of paychecks for all Smithfield employees on the payroll system.  This position is also responsible providing direction to ensure the proper handling of all payroll tax report filing and payment of all payroll related taxes.  This position is responsible for the general ledger postings for payroll and fringe benefits and management of payroll liability accounts.  Also, includes the management of the Time and Attendance system and manages the internal controls for payroll processing and time collection.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and tasks are written as follows:

  • Manages the payroll day-to-day operations for multi-state payroll including disbursement of garnishments, benefits and taxes consistent with all applicable wage and hour laws.

  • Responsible for adherence to all reporting and regulations to protect company assets and needed actions.

  • Supports system migrations, mergers, acquisitions and other project initiatives.

  • Identifies, presents and manages process improvement opportunities.

  • Ensures excellence in each of the payroll, tax and accounting processes through adherence to daily quality and control measures.

  • Overall responsibility for accurate tax payment processing.

  • Provides leadership ensuring consistent procedures and policies resulting in accurate and timely payroll processing.

  • Leads and performs special projects in support of payroll and time keeping.

  • Develops and manages performance of direct reports and team.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university in Business, Accounting, or similar major and 7+ years' payroll management experience of an in-house, multi-state operations managing direct reports; required.

  • MBA preferred.

  • SAP HCM hands-on experience, preferred. 

  • Project management experience, preferred.

  • Previous payroll implementation experience, desirable.

  • Thorough knowledge of payroll tax laws and regulations, particularly Fair Labor Standards Act, Equal Employment, and Affirmative Action regulations, and IRS code pertaining to payroll and contractor issues.

  • Excellent verbal,w ritten and customer service skills.

  • Excellent MS Office skills; proficient in MS Excel.

  • Strong leadership and change management skills are required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Payroll Department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.
