Overview

The Smithfield internship program offers students a paid opportunity to work in an environment that fosters real-life experiences, explores career options and applies your education.  You will become a part of key management meetings and participate in meaningful projects.  Our goal is to provide a working environment that not only encourages creativity, but offers equality, diversity, mutual respect and productivity.  Our summer internships are typically 10 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of new products from raw material to commercialization.
  • Partake in pilot plant tests to generate product prototypes, organizes product reviews, and provide verbal and written communication on progress of projects.
  • Understand performance relationships between meat quality and the finished product performance and quality.
  • Maintain accurate project files, formulations, specifications and product/ project data.
  • Improve product development skills though appropriate training and hands-on experience of ideation to finished product.
  • Promote innovative thinking to generate unique and value-added packaging ideas for existing or new products. Develop and maintain packaging specifications.
  • Learn basic understanding of ingredient functionality.

Qualifications

 

  • Food Science/Animal Science, Packaging Science, or related major preferred
  • Must have completed your sophomore year of college
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must have working experience with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must have the willingness to learn and work in a team environment
  • Must be a proactive thinker and self-motivated
  • Ability to multi-task while working independently and efficiently
  • Ability to prioritize work load to meet deadlines
  • Good previous work record and educational background
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
