The IT Program Director role leads the effort to establish Project Governance to ensure IT projects at Smithfield are delivered on time, within scope and within budget. This position will work with business leaders to ensure projects are prioritized and properly budgeted and staffed. Standard reporting will be developed to give Management visibility into project progress and risk identification and mitigation. Effective partnership and teamwork with internal and external IT partners and all other IT service teams is a key success factor.


The successful candidate will possess a strong combination of business process, analytical and technical skills; and will administer best practice project delivery methodologies. By leveraging your experience, leadership skills, positive attitude as well as your understanding for cross-functional relationships you will help deliver critical projects successfully within in a global environment.


Core Responsibilities

  • Oversees the full portfolio of technology projects and initiatives to ensure they align with that strategy and support IT’s long-term goals.
  • Leads a team of more than 10 project managers; developing, mentoring, and supporting talent development in the PMO area.
  • Assists project managers with issue resolution, risk management, and mitigation activities, and escalation.
  • Explaining the partnership with the ePMO and how we can optimize that relationship.
  • Project funding request preparation, approval and project cost management.
  • Partnership with the other VPs and Directors to establish Program Management Roadmaps that align to their overall strategy.
  • Coaching, training and development. attracting and retaining talent.
  • Determine a proactive strategy for appropriate staffing levels aligned directly with demand of IT resources.
  • Developing and maintaining project management standards, practices, and methodologies.
  • Provides oversight for IT projects to ensure they are on tract and meet required goals.
  • Ensures projects are budgeted, defined, tracked, and executed in a consistent and effective way that will maximize project success and drive business growth.
  • Reports status, performance, and financial health to IT and business leadership.
  • Leads continuous improvement and process optimization with technical delivery teams.

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university in business, computer information systems, management information systems, computer science or related field and 10+ years relevant professional experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an IT project leadership role with specific emphasis and deep working knowledge and experience in effective project management.
  • Experience developing a PMO Team and strategy.
  • Ability to lead and manage under conditions of ambiguity and uncertainty. Proven organizational skills in working across organizational boundaries and reporting lines - ability to work in a matrix environment as required.
  • Demonstrated discipline, analytical skills, problem-solving abilities and attention to details.
  • Working experience and knowledge of ERP projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and prioritize IT projects according to business benefit.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively communicate with peers and executive leadership
  • Strong leadership and management skills that align with the Smithfield culture. Specific skills include facilitating change, driving operational excellence, and striving for continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and guidance to project management team.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
