    Coordinates purchasing work flow such as document processing, record keeping and report compilations that require analytical skills and use of individual judgment. Creates, processes, distributes and closes purchase orders. Maintains purchasing database as well as ensure vendor network in system is up-to-date. Occasionally contacts customers, suppliers or company employees outside the immediate work area.

    Core Responsibilities

    • Creates and manages purchase orders and invoice discrepancies.
    • Responsible for purchasing packaging supplies and materials and their timely delivery to ensure production schedules are met.
    • Monitors backlog of open purchased orders, late materials, and returned materials due to quality issues. 
    • Facilitates food safety document approval process by initiating contact with vendors and the distribution of documents to Smithfield Food Safety and Quality Assurance Departments. 
    • Ensures documents are complete and up-to-date and archived within Smithfield's system. 
    • Maintains record keeping systems and marks material with part numbers, date and lot codes, revisions, etc.
    • Reports and analyzes data (all aspects of the purchase-to-payable process: number of open and closed PO’s, block PO’s, invoicing issues, inventory positions, supplier performance measurements, shipping documents, etc.) for all direct and indirect supplies. 
    • Verifies shipments against purchase orders. 
    • Collaborates with Purchasing Managers to resolve discrepancies regarding, price, quantity and quality with vendors.
    • Coordinates the disposition of obsolete inventories.
    • Monitors material supply and replenishes stock or alerts others to potential shortages.

    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 2+ years’ experience in purchasing, materials management, production scheduling, or related experience; required.
    • Associate’s degree, preferred.
    • Experience with ERP or MRP systems and Order Processing Systems, preferred.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
    • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
    • Bilingual, preferred.

    • The majority of the time is spent in an office setting outside of the production plant.  The plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
    • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
